Running With No Phone – Logic and Comfort Over Gut

Last Friday I was running on a bike trail that runs parallel to my home.  I was about ¾ of a mile along my route when an elderly gentleman approached me.  Holding a bouquet of wilted flowers he said, “Excuse me sir, I cannot find my home and I wondered if you can help me.”  I smiled at him and responded, “I would be happy to.”

I asked him where he lived.  He responded that he lived at an assisted living home for the elderly up the road.  He knew that it was at the end of a fence so he kept following it.  The problem was that he followed it for approximately 1.5 miles in the wrong direction.  This gentleman had a concern though.  He explained to me that he simply went out back to pick some flowers.  The problem was that he was not supposed to leave.  He wanted me to help him home but he also wanted me to sneak him back in so that he would not get into any trouble.  I smiled at him and politely told him that I am definitely going to make sure that he returns safely but that I am unable to sneak him back in.

I also had a problem.  I promised this gentleman that I was going to make sure that he returned safely.  He was unable to walk any more as he explained that he was tired, his back hurt, and that he felt as though he could collapse.  My problem was that I had no cell phone with me to contact anyone for assistance.  I was fortunate because I just passed a family walking with their children.  I was able to quickly sprint to them while keeping the elderly man in my sight.  I explained the situation to them and they were eager to help.  They had a cell phone and they called the local police department to send an officer to further assist this gentleman.  All said and done he returned home safely.

This situation made me further think about whether or not I should be carrying a cell phone with me sometimes or all of the time when I run. My gut feeling tells me that I should purchase a small disposable cell phone that I can carry easily.  It would have been extremely helpful to me this past Friday if there was not someone close by with one.

M
y logical thinking and my comfort beat my gut on this one though.  I have run countless times outside and it only would have been beneficial to me a small handful of times.  I would rather run without one and come up with another solution when one would be helpful.  I run my best with as little on me as possible.  Finally, I cannot forget that it was not so long ago that running with a cell phone was not even an option.

Canton Fall Classic

Thank you to the CFC Road Race Committee for a great experience!

I would like to start off by pointing out that they had to deal with a postponement.  It was originally scheduled for Sunday, October 30th.  Due to a rare October snowstorm they had to postpone it to Sunday, November 6th.   I was a first time racer at this event and I would never have known that they had to reschedule.  I almost decided not to run it because I am running a ½ marathon on November 13th but I am glad to say that I did.

When running a road race all of us like to arrive and go through our own preparatory process of getting ready to race.  No one wants to deal with distractions.  I am happy to say that the Canton Fall Classic was set up extremely well and there were no distractions of any kind.

The race was scheduled to start at 10:00 AM and I arrived around 8:45 AM.  Where to park was very clearly marked and there was a very friendly police officer to wave you in.  It was also located directly across from bib pick up and the start/finish of the race.  The officer did an amazing job of letting racers have the priority of crossing the street to the bib pick up as well as back to the parking lot.

Everything in the bib pick up area was very clearly identified with plenty of friendly volunteers waiting to assist you.

Bathrooms were a non-issue.  It was not a huge race but there were plenty of available restrooms.  I never had to wait to long and I never saw any long lines developed.

The course was fantastic and the weather was beautiful!  I did not pay much attention to the surroundings as I was focused on my running but when I noticed my surroundings it was always very pleasant.  The course included some nice hills, both up and down, fall foliage, and a very pleasant community.  The course was very clearly and accurately marked with great volunteers in place to make sure you stayed on course and calling out times at multiple locations.

Of the races that I have ran so far this was my favorite “post race at a relatively small race”.  They had great items available.  Water, chocolate milk, coffee milk, 5 Hour Energy, Larabars, bananas, apples, popcorn, pretzels, and multigrain chips.  Just about everything that a runner needs to start a great recovery process and get back into training.

This was a great race experience that I look forward to doing in the future!

Finding Running

Left Picture: February 4, 2006 - 239.8 lbs
Right Picture: July 24, 2011 - 172.6 lbs

Before running there was getting into shape at the gym using various cardio machines and lifting weights.  Before getting into shape at the gym from approximately 2004 to 2006 I made poor choices that effected my health and caused me to gain a significant amount of weight.

Above you can see a picture from approximately 5 years ago.  This was not my heaviest weight but the picture that I have on the date of a recorded weight.  I remember one day getting on the scale and weighing 250 lbs.  I exercised occasionally, made poor nutritional choices, drank too much, and smoked.

To be honest even though I was looking in the mirror at myself on a daily basis I turned a blind eye to my gradual weight gain.  I often made an excuse to myself as to why it was happening instead of taking action to improve it.

Over the course of 2006 I lost a total of 12 lbs bringing me to 234 lbs.  I made some good decisions and some bad ones during the year.  Not much changed with my food intake.  By the end of the year I started exercising regularly.  At the end of December I was doing a cardio workout 4x/week and doing a full body weight workout 2x/week.  I also greatly reduced my drinking and reduced my smoking from one pack a day to 6 to 10 per day.

In 2007 I maintained a routine exercise plan, improved my food choices, and as a result lost 27 more lbs bringing me to 207 lbs.  I also started to get on the treadmill and by the end of the year I was running on it 3x/week for 30 minutes each session.

In 2008 I lost another 5 lbs bringing me to 202 lbs, maintained the improvements I made to my life but remained a smoker.

As you can see the changes for me were gradual.  I enjoyed going to the gym but sometimes left it thinking to myself that I can't believe we have to do this everyday to stay healthy.

In 2009 things really started to change for me.  Building my cardio base up enough I ran my first 5K in May of 2009.  I never had done anything like it.  I remember being ecstatic about the race itself and the time that I finished it in.  I also remember thinking that I would like to get into better shape and try another one to see if I could go faster.  In that first road race I found something that made me want to challenge myself, advance myself, and get into better shape.

In June of 2009 I started a 12 week 5K training plan.  I loved it.  I loved being outside, working out, knowing that I was working towards achieving a goal.  I no longer felt like I was just going through the motions of something that I had to do.  I was doing this for a reason.  A month later I challenged myself and ran a 1/2 marathon.  I loved it, I was hooked.  I also remember seeing the marathoners that day and wanting to go the full distance.  Then began my love of endurance running and a smoke free life.

Welcome!

Blog, as defined in the Merriam-Webster dictionary is a Web site that contains an online personal journal with reflections, comments, and often  hyperlinks provided by the writer.

Here I will take advantage of all of the doors that the definition opens and share with you aspects of my life, thoughts, and feelings on going from living a relatively unhealthy lifestyle to leading a life with a serious passion for running.

I sincerely hope that you find value in what I bring to you and check back often for new posts.
